Babi's Story

This is the most horrible Declaw Story on this board. If you have a sensitive stomach, or you just don't want to hear about this poor kitty, please go back to the board.

On February 13, 1998 we took little Babi, who was only 6 months old at the time, to the vet to be spayed and declawed. Babi had killed the couch, and my mom didn't know about the dangers of declawing. I was 12 at the time, and I didn't really know about it either. Anyhow, I left Babi there and I was really upset that night because Babi was my cat, and she always slept with me. The next morning we went to the vet and picked Babi up. There was nothing really wrong with her then, she could walk and everything too.

Well, in about May, a Pixiebob named Pixie showed up at our house looking to be fed. She became a family pet later on. Anyway, Pixie lived in the garage, and in the morning we would open up the garage door so Pix could come around back to be fed. Babi would go BALLISTIC when Pixie came to the door. She hit the glass with her front paws and hissed loudly. She could have and would have ripped your hand off if you disturbed her.

Two months later (here's the gross part) Babi had TWO nails growing out of every one nail socket. The idiot veterinarian did the procedure wrong, and was gone before we could sue him. We took her for surgery again in July, and, sadly, they couldn't save her toe bones. There is nothing in her front toes. The skin and fur is still there, but they weren't able to save her bones. You could hit the toes with a hammer and she wouldn't be able to feel anything.

Please, please don't declaw your cat, or he/she could end up like Babi, my poor cat. Her paws are VERY badly disfigured. She is doing well though, although the fact still reamains that she will never be a normal cat.

By Sass and of course, Babi
